Whispering Curtains

Solo Exhibition and Artist Residency , Ngutungka West Lakes, History Festival 2023

‘If these walls could talk' was an expression oft used by Fiona’s maternal grandmother. The desire to record this and many other sayings from our rich verbal history was the impetus for this exhibition. The idea that if the walls could talk then curtains could whisper led to the stitching of these sayings onto vintage doilies, many of which would have been from the same era as the words were spoken. The artist saw this work as a means of preserving the phrases as well as celebrating the original workmanship in the doilies themselves.
